Coaching... Not Just for Sports

Last week I ran a seminar at the Derby 500 club in conjunction with Nigel Ashley-Jones the fitness coach for Derby County. In front of 90 business owners we used the seminar to compare the use of caoching in Sports in order to achieve Peak Performance and then drew out the comparisons with Business and what can we learn in business to achieve contniuned and sustainable growth and importantly running a business that is fit to face up to the challenges ahead.

I have summarised the key conclusions that we came to below:

A Great Sports/ Business Coach:

Guides players/ business owners and teams to success with a winning strategy

Builds a team by getting the best players / employees and coaching them  towards a common goal

Motivates, inspires and challenges players to succeed

Holds players/ owners accountable for their actions ( or lack of action) and corrects them if they get off their game plan

Uses key plays or systems to guide the team towards victory

Acts as a mentor, advisor and confidante to players, as well as a resource for information and building skills.

In the sports world what differentiates the good from the truly great is that the winners will seek out to continually push their game forward and work with the very best coaches to continually improve their game yet in the business world there are still many business owners who  have never embraced professional help to take their performance to another level.  In the words of Tiger Woods when talking about his coaching team:

"No matter how tough you think you are, you can't do this on your own..."
